Bio
Christo was best known for monumental collaborations with his partner Jeanne-Claude. The duo’s temporary projects, such as The Gates in Central Park and Wrapped Reichstag intervened in public spaces. “We borrow space and create gentle disturbances for a few days,” Christo once said. “We inherit everything that is inherent in the space to become part of the work of art. All our projects are like fabulous expeditions.” Since Jeanne-Claude’s passing, Christo continued to work on The Mastaba, Project for Abu Dhabi as well as realized Big Air Package, Gasometer, Oberhausen, 2010-13; The Floating Piers, Lake Iseo, Italy, 2014-16 and The London Mastaba, Serpentine Lake, Hyde Park, 2014-16. Christo created preparatory drawings and collages about the duo’s work, which exhibit the artist’s technical mastery and were sold to pay for the artists' temporary projects. The artists never accepted sponsorships or grants and paid for their projects entirely through the sale of Christo's original collages and drawings as well as early works.
