Reaching Out for Peace 2024

Community Identity

CITYarts collaborated with NYS Teacher of the Year and Flag Award recipient Billy Green, along with students in West Harlem from A. Phillip Randolph Campus High School (APRCHS) where he teaches. CITYarts produced and created an interior mural on a flight of stairs within APRCHS as part of a multi-year, multi-mural project in collaboration with the school and the community of West Harlem.

Students created artworks under the instruction of CITYarts artist, Daryl Daniels, through workshops that focus conceptual and critical attention on themes of peace, community, diversity, and identity. Through reflection, dialogue, and collaboration, youth developed foundational art skills and practical life skills such as time and project management.

These experiences through deep arts engagement and connected arts learning encouraged them to develop their social and academic skills while cultivating their leadership potentials and interests in community involvement. We plan to continue our collaboration next school year with a mural in one of the school’s hallways.

Sponsored in part by West Harlem Development Corporation.
